Remember if you are going to charter a boat and have more than six passengers- The boat must have a Certificate of Inspection to carry passengers issued from the USCG. Boats with a USCG COI also must carry COMMERCIAL PASSENGER INSURANCE.

Southern Drawl Yacht receives updated USCG passenger limits—50 Passengers.

The USCG has implemented new passenger headcount requirements based on modernized weight calculations. Southern Drawl has received a headcount allowance of 50 passengers from the USCG MSO. Beginning Dec 1st, 2011. Please verify that the boat you plan to charter holds a INSPECTED PASSENGER VESSEL CERTIFICATE from the Coast Gaurd. NOT just a Coast Gaurd Safety Check- a canoe can get one of those- Its an actual certificate that must be posted at all times- visible to all passengers-and presented upon request for inspection. If you are aware of a vessel carrying more than six passengers for hire (paying) without this Certificate of Inspection to carry Passengers—call us –we will notify the USCG and reward you for being a good citizen. A Southern Drawl Yacht Crew T-Shirt and $100.

Remember-when chartering a boat–Keep It Legal. Insist on a USCG Certified Passenger Vessel. Many boats in Charleston are not legally licensed by the USCG to carry over six passengers or have commercial INSURANCE. Ask to see their Certificate of Inspection before you pay !!.

Southern Drawl Yacht just completed her annual USCG Inspection-Again

The USCG requires that vessels that carry over six passengers, where at least one is paying, have a USCG Certificate Of Inspection. This inspection insures that the vessel is structurally sound, mechanically correct and has the safety equipment required to keep it's passengers safe. The crew is also required to have Merchant Mariner Certifications and it's crew be enrolled in a random drug testing program. Our boat is equipped with crash bulkheads, watertight doors, enhanced firefighting/prevention equipment, redundant bilge/pump systems. It is also required that we carry COMMERCIAL PASSENGER INSURANCE . That's why sometimes our rate may be more than some other boats who quote charters in the area. Staying legal is expensive. Is it worth the risk to be on an unlicensed, uninsured, uninspected boat to save a few bucks ? Make sure the boat you are planning on chartering is LEGAL to carry more than 6 passengers—- Ask to see the the USCG Certificate of Inspection ! If you receive a quote to carry more than 6 passengers from an un-inspected boat—call us- we will see if we can match it—–and put you on Southern Drawl. If we can't- we will pay you $100 !

Local singles who wouldn’t mind taking a private plane tour of the city or going on a deep-sea fishing trip with an eligible Charlestonian can do just that thanks to the Charleston Jaycees’ fourth annual Bachelor Bid Bash.

The charity auction will take place Aug. 20 at the Music Farm downtown and will feature local bachelors and bachelorettes and their respective date packages, as well as a silent auction.

Tickets are $30 for one person and $50 for two.

All proceeds benefit Jaycee Camp Hope, a residential camp for people with developmental disabilities.

Charleston Jaycees President Tiffany Norton said last year’s event raised $10,000 and that the group is hoping to do even better this year.

“As a state organization, the South Carolina Jaycees are committed to raising $50,000. Of that, we’ve (Charleston Jaycees) committed to raising $15,000,” Norton said. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, so this is where we’re banking a lot of our buck for Camp Hope.”

Norton said that 10 bachelors and 10 bachelorettes are expected to participate in this year’s Bash, with one surprise package at the end.

“We’ve got a great cast lined up this year,” Norton said.

John Rector, who lives on the Isle of Palms, said this is his first time participating in the event, but that he is enjoying the opportunity because it gives him a chance to give back to the community.

“I’ve been helping out a few charities in town, and the Charleston Jaycees have been around forever, so I’m good with that,” Rector said.

Rector’s date package includes a sunset cruise aboard the Southern Drawl captained by Matt Treanor and dinner with New Dream Catering provided by executive chef Eric Gaffin.

“Matt Treanor is donating the yacht and Eric Gaffin is donating the catering, including all the food, the setup and the staff. Both cases are pretty expensive stuff. That package would retail $6,000 between the champagne, the catering and the yacht,” Rector said.

The winning bidder is allowed to bring 11 of her friends along for the ride.

Rector said he fashioned the idea for his date package around what he thought would bring in the most money, citing that friends could chip in as a group to win a date with him and they’d all get to share the prize.

“Hopefully, more than one group will come prepared,” Rector said.
